For fabrication shops, equipment performance is measured by more than speed. It also comes down to how quickly production can recover when something unexpected happens.

At General Sheet Metal & Mechanical (GSM), keeping production moving is a priority. According to President Sean Keehn, that requires a machinery partner who can respond quickly, reduce downtime, and help the company plan for future growth. That experience has shaped GSM’s relationship with 1987 Machinery.

The partnership began with equipment service, giving GSM access to responsive technical assistance whenever a machine needed attention. Keehn explains that when equipment goes down, 1987 Machinery has been able to get someone onsite, solve the problem, and reduce production downtime, which is an important advantage for a fabrication operation where every hour counts.

The relationship has also expanded beyond service. Working with 1987 Machinery, GSM has added new equipment that creates greater flexibility throughout the shop. Rather than relying on a single machine for a specific operation, the company has purchased multiple pieces of equipment that provide redundancy. If one machine is temporarily unavailable, another can take its place, allowing production to continue with less disruption.

This same approach influenced GSM’s decision to replace one of its plasma cutters with a laser cutter. According to Keehn, the new laser operates nearly three times faster while producing significantly less smoke than the plasma system it replaced. Within just two weeks, the company had already experienced a noticeable increase in productivity.

The relationship continues as GSM grows. Beyond its primary operation in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, the company is establishing a new shop in Florida. Once again, 1987 Machinery is involved, helping source equipment for the new location and assisting with startup as the facility comes online.

For Keehn, the value extends beyond individual purchases. As GSM continues to expand, he expects to keep working with 1987 Machinery for its equipment expertise, product knowledge, and guidance in selecting the right machinery for each application.
